A unique variety of attractions are located throughout Gretna, such as the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium. Tucked alongside the Platte River and located in Schramm Park State Recreation Area, which is also the home of the oldest fish hatchery in the state, the Gretna State Fish Hatchery, the Aquarium is known for its twelve tanks and live exhibits, including the wooded habitats that get flooded with migrating fish during the spring.

Vala's Pumpkin Patch is a 152-acre pumpkin patch where over 55 acres of pumpkins are grown each year. Gretna is part of the Gretna Public Schools. Home to four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, Gretna Public Schools was originally founded as a two-story brick schoolhouse in 1898. Gretna Public Schools is currently building a new Junior and Senior High location. Today, Gretna Public Schools is known for the many extracurricular courses and activities that are offered to students, such as athletic and theater programs.

Colleges and Universities

Although there are not any colleges located directly in Gretna, students are located just a short drive away from several area universities and colleges. The University of Nebraska Omaha is a large state school that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide variety of subjects. Nebraska Christian College is a small, religious four-year private university that is home to just 107 students. College of Saint Mary is a small four-year private university that offers degrees in a variety of fields, but is particularly known for its nursing program. Gretna is surrounded by beautiful and spacious parks. There are seven parks total, four of which have lush picnic areas. The city also offers a variety of recreational activities by the basketball association, as well as sports such as soccer, youth softball, and tennis.

A public outdoor pool is available to residents of Gretna during the warm summer months. The pool consists of a large outdoor area as well as a small play pool for infants. In addition to recreational swim, the pool also offers swimming lessons and day camps.

Tiburon Golf Course is an impressive course that will wow even the most seasoned player. The course consists of 27 championship holes on over 12 acres of rolling hills and glistening lakes. In addition to its challenging golf course, Tiburon is also available for special events.

Open year round, Eugene T. Mahoney State Park is a state-of-the-art recreational facility that offers many outdoor activities. Some of the most popular include fishing along the stunning Platte River, as well as taking a dip in the manmade wave pool. Additional activities include tennis and basketball courts, hiking, picnicking, horseback riding, and biking.
